How Do I Practice Hitting and Fielding in Baseball if I Have Nobody to Work With?

by Roger Clemens on July 10, 2011

I haven't played baseball in 4 years and I am thinking about trying out for my high school team. None of my friends believe I want to tryout because I haven't played in so long and because I play soccer and run indoor track so they think I'm running spring track too. Any suggestions on how to practice and I don't have money to go to batting cages.

How do I practice hitting and fielding in baseball if I have nobody to work with?

You can use a pitchback, or throw balls against a cement wall for fielding practice. For hitting, one of the best things is to hit balls off of a tee.

First of all, make sure the coach knows who you are. I coach high school and if a kid who hadn’t played in 4 years, and hadn’t started training yet (tryouts are coming up in the next month or two, depending on where in the country you live) came out cold, we wouldn’t give him a second glance. If you introduce yourself to the coach now and tell him your situation, you are on his radar and he will look on ways for you to improve.

Now on to your question. The cement wall idea is good for taking some ground balls, but it’s better if you can get out on a field with a parent and just have them hit ground balls at you. Also find a batting cage in your town (usually accompanied by a mini-golf) and take some swings.
