you always want to stay low and b aware. also dont be afraid to throw people out at the bases. when you block the ball drop your knees to the ground.
keep an eye on the base runners. keep your target to the outside of the plate and down low. if you use signals, try to mix up the pitches, not all fast balls, a good change up is just as good as a fast ball. after each out, let the infield players know how many outs there is. catching is a fun job, don’t stand too close to the plate or you will get hit in the head…have fun and good luck
One of the big things about being a catcher is being the leader of your team, without getting the acknowledgement of actually “being” the leader. There’s tons of strats on how to “catch” well. My advice is get a personal trainer to work with you on
a) framing the plate
b) your stance
c) throwing to second
d) general on the field mechanics (like where to go if the ball is hit to left field) and such
master those, and you’re well on your way to being the next Brian McCann
Man catcher is a tough position to teach over the computer. A few pointers for you. Work on your blocking, this is the most important thing, especially at the lower levels where pitchers have less control. Also work on quick releases on your throws, you want your throw to become one fluid motion. You want to see the perfect form when throwing watch some highlights of Henry Blanco, he probably gets rid of the ball quicker then any catcher. You also need to pay attention to every pitcher you catch and recognize their strengths and weaknesses; you also need to watch them throughout the course of a game, you need to recognize what they may be doing wrong so you could tell them. Work on giving signs so that other teams can’t steal them, keep them high in the crotch area so it can’t be seen by the 1st or 3rd base coach and make sure it’s high so that they can’t see it from underneath. Work on framing the ball, this is a big thing because it’s your way to help pitchers get calls that are borderline. Also know where you need to be at all times, like a ball hit to the SS, you need to book it down the line to back up the first baseman. Behind the plate, you are the only person who sees everything on the field, you are the field general and must know what is going on at all times. This is about as much info as I can give you without working with you one on one.
Rule #1: You are the field general. There is only player on the field that has the entire field in front of them and that’s you. Be vocal. Direct your teammates. Example: With runners on 1st and 2nd, a batter lays down a bunt that’s fielded by the pitcher. Only you can see if he has time to get the runner at third or he has to throw to first. You make the call. That means you have to be situationally aware at all times.
Rule #2: Nothing gets by you. Make the opposition work to advance on the base paths. Stop wild pitches and no passed balls. Drop to your knees like a hockey goalie to stop balls in the dirt.
Rule #3: Work the umpire. But you have to subtle. Don’t argue, nudge. If you have the glove on the outside corner, your pitcher hits it and the umpire calls it a ball, hold your glove there for a second. Put doubt in his mind. You might get the call next time.
Rule #4: Know your pitcher. You’re probably not at an age where pitchers are throwing anything other than a fastball so calling a game isn’t important right now. But you can be a calming influence. If you think your pitcher is upset because the ump isn’t giving the outside corner, call time and go out and calm him down.
