Are they good enough to catch a baseball with? Does it hurt your hand when you catch the ball? What is it like to use those old type of baseball gloves compared to the new modern ones?

They weren’t much bigger than today’s batting gloves. If you get a chance to go to a baseball, or sports, museum, you would wonder how anyone could field with them.

Yes they were the size of a winter glove, with some webbing between the thumb and first finger. If you look at the fielding statistics, you see that errors were more common in the 19th century and dead ball eras. Remember though, the ball was softer, so that makes the impact less on your hand. You can catch well with the old gloves once you get used to it. I have played with my uncle’s gloves; one from 1915 (when he played) and another from 1930 (when he coached). You have to be more precise with your footwork and really catch with two hands. Obviously, your range is less.
