Who Holds the Major League Baseball Record for Stealing Home?

by Roger Clemens on February 22, 2011

Is it Rickey Henderson? He just got inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. I know that he has stolen the most career bases. Stealing home must be one of the most difficult feats in sport.

Ty Cobb holds the MLB record with 54 career home plate steals. He is followed by Max Carey (33), George Burns (28), and Honus Wagner (27).

Rickey Henderson stole 1406 bases in his career with only 4 of them being home plate. I’m not sure why he didn’t try to steal home more often.

Ty Cobb stole home 54 times. Obviously speed is essential, but timing is everything, more so than any other base. A runner has to start long before the ball leaves the pitcher’s hand to beat the throw, or at least the catcher’s reaction, to the plate. Rickey only stole home a few times, less than 6, in his career. It isn’t done as often in the modern era for some reason, I think sabermetrics. The percentage of success is so small it’s not done as often any more. You look at the names of players with 10+ steals of home and none of them are really considered “modern” players. Paul Molitor and Rod Carew are possibly the most recent names on the list.
