Ya know, I was just wondering the other day why Babe Ruth never appeared in any of these shots!

Got any photos of Babe Ruth and Commissioner Landis together?

We’re not finding any photos of Babe Ruth and Commissioner Landis in a quick search of the Prints & Photographs Online Catalog ( http://www.loc.gov/rr/print/catalog.html ), which includes the Bain Collection photographs as well as many other digitized and undigitized images. You can see quite a variety of images of Landis with other people by searching the catalog.

We’ll continue the hunt by checking images that are not described individually in the catalog and write back to you directly via FlickrMail.

LoC: Thank you for your response. I have in the past searched for photos of Judge Landis (my grandfather’s cousin) and Babe Ruth together, and have doubts that any exist. They (to put it mildly) did not like each other.

This is Babe Ruth (left), Jack Dunn (middle), and Jack Bentley (right) before a baseball exhibition game. Babe Ruth played professional baseball from 1914 until 1935, and is considered one of the best sports heroes in American culture. Jack Dunn also played major league baseball who played pitcher. He eventually became a minor league club owner. Jack Bentley was a left-handed pitched in the major leagues in the early twentieth century for nine years.
