What a fabulous photo! Love the melding of sports and photography! I had no idea this ballplayer even existed, and we shared a last name at one time.

Found in a search. (?)

Germany was quite a character back in the day. You can read about him in this book: http://www.amazon.com/Man-Who-Stole-First-Base/dp/0878336338

I suppose it was a lot easier to go to the baseball park with that equipment than a national park.

There were a number of shots taken of old cameras and their photographers. Not as much as today but it still was done.
This belongs In Explore!

No wonder it isn’t in Explore. There’s no EXIF data for Glass negatives.

Viajante March 30, 2010 at 11:02 am

Germany Schaefer was born in 1876, not 1877.

The New York Highlanders ultimately became the New York Yankees.

Gigi Mazzarini (mazzarinieyes) March 30, 2010 at 11:46 am

great… is not ultra slim cam

The Library of Congress March 30, 2010 at 12:40 pm

Viajante: It appears that you are correct about Germany’s birth year. We found some citations for 1877 and some for 1876. A biographer from the Society for American Baseball Research helped us confirm the correction. Thanks for catching this! We’ll correct the source data and the description above.

Warm Greetings:

This is an exemplary shot! We have to pause and really consider how far photography has really advanced and/or evolved. For those of us who have worked in (the chemistry end of) the earlier photography medium I’m sure there is the utmost respect, and appreciation for the craft, in those former days.

There was a whole preparation, process, and final rendition of whatever capture that was sought- it certainly wasn’t instantaneous, but in fact the photographers of that day (beyond amateurs) had to think spontaneously and were often able to capture the most opportune moments. Sometimes the most dynamic moments weren’t preplanned and when photographed in that manner it created a legacy of some of the most enduring images to date…

Truly, we can witness the science of photography at its best! Homage to all of the early trail blazers, pioneers, and those following after… It’s a great legacy!

Tenga La Paz!

I thought finding polaroid 600 series film was difficult. I can only imagine trying to track down some glass negative 5×7 these days.

Joseph D'Angelo March 30, 2010 at 3:04 pm

The New York Highlanders, by the way, are the predecessors to the modern-day New York Yankees. They became the New York Yankees in 1913 when they moved to the Polo Grounds.
